Matte makeup is perfectly fine — don’t get us wrong — but lately we’ve been really into metallic makeup. Judging by the glistening lids we’ve seen on some of our favorite celebrities recently, we’re guessing that we’re not alone in our obsession. ut you know the old adage: Make new, erm, eye shadow friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold. That’s not exactly true these days, when there is a full spectrum of alloys in every shade imaginable. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Just look to these nine stars as metallic makeup inspiration, from shimmering sapphire, dusky bronze, and every twinkle and glimmer in between.

Emily Ratajkowski’s Brass Smoky Eye

There is nothing wrong with a traditional black smoky eye. Nothing wrong at all. But there’s also something truly special about one rendered in an unexpected metallic. Here, the model is working a reflective brass, but silver and gold tones would work just as well.

Ruby Rose’s Silver Liner

If ever you needed proof that you don’t need to do a ton to pull off impactful makeup, look no further than these fluttery lashes and imperfect smudge of silver shadow on the bottom lashline.

Allison Williams’ Mellow Gold and Green Lids

If she weren’t looking downward, you might think pinky lips and cheeks were the beginning and end of Williams’ sleek makeup. Happily, an opaque wash of sunny gold on the inner corners and a dusky green swept across the lids give the girly look something sultrier.

Kate Bosworth’s Bronze Shadow

A halo of bronze shadow around the actress’s lids has an almost-ethereal effect, but matte earth-toned lips ground the look.

Tessa Thompson’s Bronze Cat-Eye

What better way to accent a slinky LBD than with a soft and sculpted cat-eye in a smoldering rust bronze? Notice how the rest of the actress’s makeup is relatively low-key — rosy blush, satin lips — so as not to compete with the eyes.

That is how metallic work on your makeup. You can apply this makeup style by yourself, it’s not too hard to try. Do you get any inspiration from these celebrities?
